Thriller Openings - Momento, Brick and Zodiac

An opening to a film is very important, as this is what the audience first see's when watching a film, and can decide whether they carry on watching or they turn of the film or leave the cinema.

Momento


Conventions - Weapons(gun), blood, flashbacks, enigmas(going backwards)
Camera - shot reverse shots, close up shots
Editing - rewinding of shots
Sound - Non - diegetic suspense music
Mise en Scene - black and white scenes, abandoned buildings


Brick


Conventions - Mystery, flash backs, dead bodies
Camera - hand held(realistic effect) auto-focus
Editing - Graphic match
Sound - sound bridge, non - diegetic music and dialogue
Mise en scene - Canal, Dark, school setting


Zodiac



Conventions - mystery, shock, weapon(gun)
Camera - point of view shot, close up shots, shot reverse shot
Editing - captions
Sound - non diegitic sound
Mise en scene - fireworks, middle of forrest
