Narritive - Structure, Formulas and Devices

Continuity Editing

This is a single flow in different shots editing together to keep the film going smoothly, assisted with diagetic sound crossing over scenes, to keep the psychological thought of one continuous flow, flowing.

Cause and Effect

The clear and establishment of 'cause and effect' plotting which establishes character motivations or intentions and helps tell and interesting story which happens over a period of time, and the film makers have control over how the audience grasps the story.

Enigmas

In thrillers, this is normally something the protagonist has to solve before the end of the film. An example of this could be where one murder becomes a series of murders, and the murderer itself has to be found before the end of the film.

Red Herrings

A red herring is a term given to a device in the film which intent to divert the audience attention, from commonly an item of significance. this also may used with other devices such as enigmas to create suspension within the film.
An example of a red herring that was given to us was; in Saw, two characters spent time in a room, with a dead person, and they inflicted the death of this person to be their fault, however at the end, they realise that the person wasn't actually dead, but in fact they were the killer.

Cliffhangers

A cliffhanger, is often featured by the protagonist in a doggy dilemma, or possibly confronted by a shocking revelation. this normally grasps the audiences attention to the screen as they want to know what will happen next. An example of this can be seen in the movie North By Northwest, when Mr Thornhill is literately hang off of a cliff, and the grasps the audience attention because you wonder what will happen next.
